(More customer reviews)I had been looking for the perfect dutch oven for several years to do cassoulets, large simmering dishes etc. I wanted good stainless, very even heat (because of burn potential for those simmered recipes), 10 quarts (I would actually have preferred 12 - I am tired of having to spread my recipes across several pots) and a good looking pot.
I thought I had found my match in this rondeau. It bought it a few weeks ago (from a discounter I am afraid), and we have been playing with it almost everyday.
The rondeau is good looking and sturdy. It is solidly built, yet not as heavy as I thought it would be - a good point. The pot measures exactly 5" without the top, with an outside diameter of 13.5", and an inside diameter of approximately 12"3/4. The solid handles have an outside dimension of 13"9/16. With the burner on medium, they do not get significantly hot, and allow pick up with your bare hands. Be careful though! We have a large Wolf stove, and the rondeau barely fits on one burner - we cannot use a large pan on the next burner. I would say that the diameter is perfect for us in terms of the range, but I suspect that smaller ranges might not accommodate it as easily. The pot is, as usual with AllClad, fully lined to the rim. The rim is lipped, making a pour easier. The lid is well built, with a strong handle, and an outside diameter of 13"3/4.
My nitpicks:
- I would have preferred it a tad taller and narrower: it is very wide and surprisingly short (i had not realized how short when I ordered it). because of the large circumference, to cook 1" below the rim already involves the loss of 2 quarts.
- the lid for this expensive pot does not fit perfectly. Its inside rim is probably 1/2" short to be able to seal the opening better. You can move it left and right when it is on the top of the pot.
I would have loved to love this piece. As it is, I think I am going to really use it a lot and I really, really like it. I am not in love yet:-)
UPDATE Feb 17, 2010: after 2.5 months of use, I find the rondeau really a very good pot - excellent for a simmer, with good capacity and good looks. I still think the top could be better fitting. All in all, I look at it as a 4.5 star product.
